2-4 Days
Country
CA
Container
Frozen plasma (call customer service for specimen handling protocol: 1-800-872-1001, dial 0)
Specimen
0.5 mL aprotonin treated EDTA plasma
Description
Evaluation of endogenous ACTH is most commonly used to differentiate pituitary-dependent from adrenal tumor causes for Cushing's syndrome. Also used to determine primary (adrenal gland disease) from the secondary (pituitary gland disease) causes for Addison's disease and to evaluate metabolic syndrome in horses.

Free T4 by Equilibrium Dialysis Add-On

Code
CADD50
Results
2-4 Days
Country
CA
Container
Serum in red top or serum separator
Specimen
0.5 mL serum
Description
The free T4 by equilibrium dialysis [(fT4(ED)] test is the gold standard for determining the non-protein-bound ("free"), biologically active portion of T4. The "free" T4 comprises less than 0.1% of the total amount of T4 in blood. This test includes a dialysis step, in which the serum is dialyzed across a semi-permeable membrane to separate protein-bound from non-protein-bound fractions of T4. After dialysis (dialysis takes 18 hours), the non-protein-bound ("free") T4 concentration is measured in the dialysate. The FT4 (ED) test is used as a confirmatory test in the diagnosis of hypothyroidism in dogs and hyperthyroidism in cats. This test should not be used alone but rather as an adjunct to Total T4 (in dogs and cats), in addition to potentially TSH. All results need to be interpreted in light of clinical signs.

Fructosamine

Code

Results
1-2 Days
Country
CA
Container
Serum in red top or serum separator
Specimen
0.5 mL serum
Description
Best used in conjunction with other parameters (clinical signs and blood sugar monitoring) when trying to evaluate the efficacy of insulin treatment. It can be used to differentiate stress hyperglycemia from diabetes mellitus.

Fructosamine Add-On

Code
CADD260
Results
Daily
Country
CA
Container
Serum in red top or serum separator
Specimen
0.5 mL serum
Description
Serum fructosamine concentrations reflect the mean blood glucose concentrations during the preceding one to two weeks. The measurement can be used to differentiate stress hyperglycemia from diabetes mellitus. Fructosamine interpretation should occur in conjunction with history, physical examination findings and clinical signs when trying to classify glycemic control in a diabetic patient.
