Container
Serum in red top or serum separator
Specimen
0.5 mL serum
Description
The free T4 by equilibrium dialysis [(fT4(ED)] test is the gold standard for determining the non-protein-bound ("free"), biologically active portion of T4. The "free" T4 comprises less than 0.1% of the total amount of T4 in blood. This test includes a dialysis step, in which the serum is dialyzed across a semi-permeable membrane to separate protein-bound from non-protein-bound fractions of T4. After dialysis (dialysis takes 18 hours), the non-protein-bound ("free") T4 concentration is measured in the dialysate. The FT4 (ED) test is used as a confirmatory test in the diagnosis of hypothyroidism in dogs and hyperthyroidism in cats. This test should not be used alone but rather as an adjunct to Total T4 (in dogs and cats), in addition to potentially TSH. All results need to be interpreted in light of clinical signs.
