New rules from the CFIA regarding EIA testing

Dear Equine Veterinarian,
Spring is just around the corner, and with spring comes the season for Coggins testing!
Our accredited technicians and laboratories are ready to receive your samples, and we encourage you
to begin your testing as soon as possible. This way, we can avoid backlogs and reduce emergency
requests.
To ensure that this busy period runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible, here are some
recommendations and best practices:
1) Make sure your accreditation is still valid! Time flies by quickly!
2) The minimum quantity of serum is 1ml.
3) The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has strengthened rules regarding errors. A
submission form containing major errors may risk having its sample rejected.
4) The most common error concerns the date of birth. Be sure to double-check it before sending.
5) Regarding horse identification: The horse’s name must exactly match on the sample and on the
form. Ensure that both are identical. Any discrepancy between the name on the GVL form and
the tube will result in rejection, and a new sample and a new form will need to be returned.

If a discrepancy is observed between the identification on the tube and on the form, they must be
rejected since under no circumstances can the identification on the tube be corrected (point 3.4.1.), nor
the form when it concerns an identification error (point 3.4.2.)
